Deployment and Strengthening of Community based Wireless Networks in Latin America and the Caribbean

The WiLAC portal, the Latin American Networks School Foundation (EsLaRed), the Network Startup Resource Center (NSRC) and the Institute for the Connectivity of the Americas (ICA) announce a call for proposals to participate in the deployment and strengthening of community based wireless networks in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This project will facilitate the deployment of 15 wireless networks in rural and urban-marginal regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. The selection and administration of these pilot wireless networks will take place through an open and competitive process, where the wireless connectivity equipment will be given to local institutions that meet the established requirements. The new networks should offer information and communication services that reflect local interests at the community level. The administrators of these networks, as well as other wireless community based network entrepreneurs, will be part of a learning network on wireless technologies and its applications. By taking advantage of scheduled events in the region and the exchange and systematization of lessons learned, the learning network will consolidate a community of wireless network entrepreneurs in our region.

Selected candidates will receive an equipment package that allows establishing the connection between a central station and 4 remote points located at a maximum of 5 km (with line of sight). This number can be exceeded in special cases.

DIGITAL POVERTY, Latin American and Caribbean Perspectives

This book represents the first publication of the Regional Dialogue on the Information Society (DIRSI in Spanish), a regional network of leading researchers concerned with the creation and dissemination of knowledge that supports effective participation in the Information Society by the poor and marginalized communities in Latin American and the Caribbean.

The chapters that follow reflect different studies undertaken by DIRSI members under the common theme of pro-poor, pro-market ICT policies. This theme seeks to support next-generation policy reforms that build on the achievements of market liberalization efforts but at the same time address the realities of what we call digital poverty a concept that seeks to grasp the multiple dimensions of inadequate levels of access to ICT services as well as the barriers to their productive use.

OS Independence?

All,
Nice little piece of software here. I wish I would have known about it 1.5 yeas ago when I lived in the area.

Couple of things...

1) It seems like this is OS dependant, running only on Linux and other UNIX based OSs. Is that right? If so, could one compile this on CYGWIN and make it work?

2) I am currently performing an evaluation of mesh neworking software for applications on amateur radio HSMM networks using 802.11b (channel 6). A licensed ham (amateur) radio operator, operating an 802.11b device, may operate it under FCC Part 97 which allows for high-powered amplification and advanced directional antennas. Is anyone aware of anyone operating CUWiN in this respect?

Startup: Legality and Proposal

It seems this project relies on citizens' personal connections to share with the community, but it is not mentioned anywhere an agreement with ISPs. I don't personally know about my ISP (Time Warner), but I always thought you were not allowed to share the connection.

Secondly, assuming no legal problems, has anyone developed some proposals for the community council. Also, this project was founded with a grant, any tips on getting some seed money?

Thanks,
Jake

State of the art

I'd like to know the state of the art of municiple wireless now.

The postings here seem rather spotty. I'm wondering if this means that the interest in muniwireless is losing steam...
and losing steam because if price cutting by SBC.

I've seen some wireless projects such as Osage that have rates 3x that of what my monthly billing is from an SBC provider based in my own home town.

At these rates, what sort of proposal can I take to the city alders to make a permanent and controlled muni service where rates are guaranteed to be the lowest?

Optical cable has just been laid throughou the entire city (about
80,000 po.)

Wifi hot spots are becoming more common at such locations as the public library but are not widespread. This use of laptops does not even effect me. What I'd prefer is using a thin client terminal under Linux or some such for my own use.

So who can say something about what's going on now? Are communities actually unplugging more than they are plugging in and pursuing the muniwireless program?

Basic queries re: establishing a new wifi net

Hi,

I'm a part of a team that wants to develop a wifi network in Cincinnati Ohio. We are novices.

We would like to establish a node system next spring and are considering experimenting with cantennas to link up a handful of homes this week.

Could we setup cantennas for use as a start? It seems cheap, easy. Is this a waste of time if we'll eventually build the bigger kind?

2)What is the optimum or acceptable distance between wifi nodes?

3) What is the cost per node ($1-200 per, I think)

4)Can we use the existing RR lines for the internet hookup? Or do we need a t-1?

Hey Everyone,

We have decided to go in a different directional with our roll-out (WRT54G running OLSR - Love to see HSLS on it) and we won't be using the Metrix Boxes we ordered. My goof but you benefit.

I need to unload 12 and I am willing to part with them for $150. This is the Mark I kit with 200mw card.

If you are interested drop me an email at chris@sominet.com.

This is the first place I am offering but I will posting wherever to try and recover some dough on these.

Pics are available if you want them and I will throw in shipping.

Thanks,
VOIP Problem IN WRT54G

Key Topics:

The pinging time from one device other is less or equal 2 ms. Data transmission rate 36 mbps, db -80, noise 94. We are using SIP protocol & G723 (5.3 and/or 6.3 kbits/sec) codec on all devices (SIPURA, IP Phone). When two or three user simultaneously want to dial the voice quality fall down or some times it showing busy tone. But only one user can talk very comfortably.

Devices:

We are set WRT54g in the base unit as an Access Point(AP) and the remote unit as a client bridge.

Basic Setup in AP(192.168.0.101):

• Wireless mode Access point
• Wireless network mode mixed
• Wireless network name SSID : JP-1
• Wireless Channel : 11 -2.4 GHz
• Wireless SSID Broadcast Enable
• DHCP disable
• Firmware version FREE Man basic 1.0.2
• TX power 84 mW (19.2dBm)
• QoS: enabled and all ports set max priority.

Basic Setup in Client Bridge (192.168.0.102):

• Wireless mode Client Bridge
• Wireless network mode mixed
• Wireless network name SSID : JP-1
• Wireless Channel : 11 -2.4 GHz
• Wireless SSID Broadcast Enable
• DHCP disable
• Firmware version FREE Man basic 1.0.2
• TX power 84 mW (19.2dBm)
• QoS: enabled and all ports set max priority.

Advance Settings:

Authentication Type: (Default: Auto)
Basic Rate: Default
Transmission Rate: Auto(Default: Auto)(but we check 36mbps)
CTS Protection Mode: (Default: Disable)
Frame Burst: Disable (Default: Disable)
Beacon Interval: (Default: 100)
DTIM Interval: (Default: 1)
Fragmentation Threshold: (Default: 2346, Range: 256 - 2346)
RTS Threshold: (Default: 2347, Range: 0 - 2347)
AP Isolation: Off (Default: Off)
TX Antenna: Auto (Default: Auto)
RX Antenna: Auto (Default: Auto)
TX Power: 84mw
Afterburner: Off (Default: Off)

2nd try :

We have also tried with firmware WRT54GV4[1].0_4.20.6_US_code. This firmware is linksys last release official firmware. We have set up wireless net work mode G-only in both devices. Unfortunately there is no option to set here as wireless AP or Client -bridge.

It will be highly apprecitaed if u can hgelp me.
